A Lot to Learn from Dr. Who?
On a road trip this summer, a colleague of mine marveled that I had never watched an episode of Dr. Who, a long-running BBC television series. He thought it was a show I would enjoy. AND I do! Having just finished watching the first season, I do love Dr. Who! What I found marvelous is Dr. Who's attitude. No matter the magnitude of the challenge, he grins, appears to be enjoying himself, and comes up with an original solution at the last possible minute. What kind of early conditioning would one need to acquire an attitude like this? If we really work on it, could we acquire this attitude? An attitude can be defined as a habit of thinking. While it has been traditionally thought that habits are rather inflexible, new research suggests we can have flexible habits and that our brain favors new habits over old habits. This is the reason the practice of coaching is so effective and has become popular. It provides us accountability and the support to build new habits, making us cognizant of the triggers and rewards for our current habits.
