Transitioning to a Hybrid or Online Workplace
Hybrid and online workplaces have a variety of benefits for both the employer and their employees. Some benefits include:
Saving money on expenses and costs associated in managing an office
Increased and more diverse range of potential new hires
More flexible work schedules, for both the employer and employee
Transitioning to either workplace may seem like an attractive choice due to these benefits; however, an organization has to make sure that it is capable of supporting remote work. This includes whether the organization has the money to invest in remote software and hardware (ex. Zoom, laptops for employees). Organizations also have to gauge whether or not the employees themselves will accept this change; while hybrid or online workplaces often offer more flexibility, some employers and employees may prefer a completely in-person workplace or have trouble acclimating themselves to an online environment. Because of this, it is important to not only understand the costs and expenses when transitioning to an online environment, but also the organization’s culture and how employees may react.
Every organization is different, and as such, it is also important to take into account the industry the organization is in, and whether or not an online environment would be suitable. For some industries, it would be far more efficient and effective for employees to work in office, to the point where working remotely would be too costly and decrease productivity. Organization leaders should evaluate their current work model and whether transitioning to an online environment would be sustainable and lead to positive effects for the organization in the future.
The way we work is constantly evolving, so it is integral for organization leaders and decision-makers alike to evaluate possible opportunities that could create positive impacts for their organization.
